Portland City Council Candidate Pious Ali got off to a fast start in fundraising during the first quarter, raising $10,677 in total in hand and pledged donations. The average contribution to Ali’s campaign was just $25.
“I’m so gratified by the support I’ve received from so many people,” Ali said. “Getting an early start will allow me to focus more time on listening to voters and understanding their concerns as the campaign moves forward.”
Ali’s donations were primarily raised via the Internet in small contributions, following the example set by the presidential campaigns of Bernie Sanders and Barack Obama.
Unlike in state elections, there is no clean elections public financing program for municipal races in Maine.
